Monteleone di Spoleto, in the heart of Umbria, is on a hill overlooking the valley of river Corno, in a wide valley with spelt fields. It’s on the list of the most beautiful villages (in italian “borghi”) of Italy so it’s a must see destination during our motorbike trips and tours.
Monteleone has a strategic position between some historical communication routes: to south, the Leonessa, to est the Salaria and the valley of river Tronto. In XVII century the Iron route and the upland areas used for thanshumance were added to the previous ones.
What to see
The church of San Francesco is the main structure of the borgo. At the end of XIV century it was divided into two parts by two big vaults. The lower church has two aisles: in the central one there is a panelled ceiling from XVIII century. Among the artworks you can admire a wooden statue of Sant’Antonio Abate, an early XV century’s fresco portraying the Madonna del Voto, a baroque altar dedicated to San Felice.
In the San Francesco’s complex is on display a copy of an etruscan chariot, made by walnut wood, covered by bronze plates, with the helm going out from a boar’s mouth and the ending part with the shape of a bird’s head. Foto Chiesa San Francesco Monteleone Di Zyance – Opera propria, CC BY-SA 2.5.
In front of the borgo you can admire the mountains surrounding the Leonessa highland, with two peaks, Cambio and Tila.
What to do
Like in Borgo di Arrone, in Monteleone you can do trekking, go horse riding, use mountain bike and discover the itineraries of industrial archeology in the mines.
From 5 to 9 of Dicember there is the Mostra Mercato del Farro, the unique Dop of Europe. The third week of July there is the San Felice’s fair. On 15 of August in the morning the historical parade Cybo Malaspina takes you to the Monteleone of 1516 and the church of San Francesco receives the gift of famous “doppiero”: this candle will burn for all the year; in the afternon Palio del Doppiero is the competition between Terzieri to win the palio lost the year before. On the 11 of August there is the Sagra degli Strascinati, “lo magnar delli viandanti”.
What to taste
Typical products of Monteleone are the extra virgin olive oil, truffles, pecorino cheese and famous norcineria della Valnerina (sausages and salami).
