From our passion for motorcycles and travel comes the awareness of the importance of road safety, not just passive, choosing the right bike, helmet and equipment but also the active one: driving.
Dangers are increasingly on the increase among mobile phones, holes, obstacles and much more, but sometimes we are too, overestimating our abilities only because we have been driving for a lifetime.
So we decided to go back to school, with Claudio Conte, founder of the “Guida Sicura Urbana” association, an excellent driver, test driver and above all an instructor, to test ourselves and see what he really teaches, given that today the offer is vast and internet often disorienting us and sometimes betraying us.
Question: today would you pass the license theory exam or a grammar exam? I honestly don’t and I think it’s the same when driving. We settle down, get comfortable like on the couch, do it with addiction and the level of the guard goes down, not only for what surrounds us but for how we do it.
We then went to Lake Como, to have the course on the road to one of our readers, in order not to be biased and to have feedback without filters.
We were there only at the start to attend the briefing and to see Claudio wearing the intercom on Giovanni’s helmet, precisely because the one-to-one course is a curve-by-turn full immersion, with “live” corrections so you can’t forget it and so that it can be applied immediately.
I followed them for a few turns, at a normal pace of those who already know how to go well on a motorcycle, but seeing them come back that left me let’s say I’m thrilled, especially when I saw Giovanni’s rear tire compared to the photo taken at the start and in particular his smile when he told me “A world has opened up”.
What happened to him is told directly by Giovanni.
“The bike, according to Claudio, is an instrument that should never be underestimated, because as soon as you lower your guard it punishes you, because it never tames him: you have to check it, meter after meter, curve after curve, with the right postures, the right ones driving dynamics, learning to know and recognize the right trajectories and the correct movement for what you are about to perform. The fun in motorbikes passes from the awareness of the dangers that are run and that the control is obtained only with the right technique and attention.”
“I give you my example: I did not feel the bike, I had this sense of “floating” and I was thinking of stiffening the shock absorbers, victim of the thousand tips and posts read on the net: the curves felt bad and I set them even worse. Now, after three hours of correct driving, it seemed to me that I was driving another bike, more solid and stable, more “on the track”, but to make the difference were neither suspension nor anything else, but the application of everything what Claudio told me while I was driving. All the things I thought I was already doing, from the position to the movements, from the brakes to the trajectories, were either wrong or I didn’t do them at all.”
In practice, I, who am writing to you, now I struggle to keep up with him, and not for speed but for what it has learned: now it sets the hairpin bends, and not only, in total safety and with a fluency that I admit to envy.
“The course transmits to you and gives you the” mantra “of the biker, based on 4 fundamental points, to be repeated mentally and physically until they become automatic and natural gestures. Claudio Conte, in his one-to-one courses, literally lets you know and understand your bike from the moment it is turned off on the stand to when you come back in and put it back on the stand. It leads you on the roads that you might have intended to do (panoramas with twists and turns and breathtaking landscapes) or that you have already done several times, discovering how the guide changes and the experience with the necessary precautions and technical advice. ”
The dynamic method applied by Claudio takes on a much higher value than the average or compared to group courses, both because in four hours of individual course there is an incomparable level of mutual attention, besides the intercom system allows you to react and learn instantly, retaining a decidedly more indelible learning memory. Moreover, the acquired technique allows to assume a driving position, dynamic and static, which allows to have less muscle and postural discomforts, gaining in terms of less fatigue and consequently traveling and grinding kilometers with less problems.
We thank Claudio Conte for availability and in particular for the professionalism with which he put a new motorcyclist on the road. We also thank Urban Safe Guide for its constant commitment to training experienced pilots, beginners, women and children, on the road, in the city and on the track and in raising awareness of road safety, active and passive. Finally, we remind you that the courses are on request, customizable, at an affordable cost and that security is the best investment you can make. For more information visit guidasicuraurbana.it.
PS: For a day-long walk don’t load yourself with luggage and unnecessary weight, often the essential is enough in a small bag to tie a jacket on and easy to carry with you. We found ourselves perfectly with the SW-MOTECH Drybag 80 and can also tie in to the Big Twin engine shields.
