Travelling through Australia is a unique but not easy experience: from costs to visas, here are the tips for an unforgettable trip.
When we think of Australia, a country that is at the same time a continent for its size, we think about long flights, things to see, the landscapes and the most fun things to do, but we forget many important details.
Australia is as beautiful as it is complex. For this reason we want to list a series of things to know before departing and give you some travel advices, especially when you decide to discover this continent by motorcycle.

We all would love to take our motorbikes to Australia, but it’s not always convenient. The cost to ship the bike might be high: transport, insurance (mandatory) and customs clearance, plus the fact that you will have to stay with no bike for a long time before and after.
Motorcycle rental therefore seems the best solution and it is not even very expensive, it starts from about 120 dollars a day for a Honda CB 500X for over 20 days, for example, with the advantage of having assistance throughout the trip. It is always better to contact rental agencies with multiple locations in the country.
Traveling by motorbike is also the art of contained luggage but remember that in a large country like Australia you will find many different climatic conditions and a hot sun in the high seasons.
We therefore recommend that you bring a multi-layered and very ventilated protective garment, a tire repair kit, a GPS, a helmet in compliance with the country’s homologation, sun protection, a first aid kit, a flashlight and a powerbank, as well as to the classic motorcycle equipment with which you travel regularly.
Australia is expensive. Life costs more or less twice as much as in Italy and I’m talking about life in general, like shopping, rents, transport … so arm yourself with a nice wallet and some credit cards, especially if you want to sleep in a hotel and eat in restaurants. Fortunately, petrol is not as expensive as we are, so you can ride many kilometers at a much lower cost than a pizza and a beer.
Not everyone knows that the visa is mandatory for everyone, both for tourism and for work, including minors. Many of us often consider Western countries to be always open to us Europeans. Unfortunately, the anti-terrorism security protocols and the recent Covid19 pandemic require an entry visa to enter the country.
The visa check takes place already at the airport, where there is no excuse “I did not know”: from Italy or Europe in general, you cannot board if you don’t have the right one. Applying for an Australia visa online is much simpler, faster and even cheaper, than applying for it yourself by going to the embassy or consulate, where you waste time in queues, questions and travel back and forth for the request and for the withdrawal.
Last but not least, the passport must be valid for at least 6 months. As with any trip, we suggest that you request it in time, in order to avoid bad surprises, but if you are close to departure, at this link you can apply for an Australia visa urgently.
Australia is immense. The continent is really very large so it is unthinkable to do “a tour” of Australia in a month. There are so many things to see and do, especially if you want to go to Tasmania too, and the distances are enormous. Then decide what you want to do and how much time you have (and in what season) in order to choose the best area to explore by motorcycle.
Due to its extension, Australia covers more climatic zones, from the torrid desert areas to the tropical ones in the north, to the temperate climate in the southern cities. The best times to visit Australia are the intermediate seasons, autumn and spring, avoiding the scorching heat of some places in summer and the excessive cold and wind in winter.
The best way to see kangaroos crossing the road on the strips is to go slow. There are many around the town and you will notice it from the numerous danger road signs: pay attention. Rather, beware of spiders (especially small ones) and snakes (outside the city), especially if you decide to sleep in tents or bungalows that are very accessible to small animals.
Let’s finally move on to food, in a country where ethnic and fusion cuisine is really very good and where, you must try the kangaroo burgers because they are really delicious! If you want to accompany the meat with a bottle of wine, you can buy it in a bottle shop and bring it to the restaurant.
For those of us who are used to having a drink out of the bars (in the city), here you risk a fine: you can’t drink outside the clubs and you can’t even walk around the street with alchool, open (or even closed), but only if it is inside a bag!
