Agnellotreffen 2019 – the highest winter motorcycle rally in Italy has reached its sixth edition. Over 1500 motorcyclists have dared the winter cold to reach Pontechianale in Val Varaita (CN).
Saturday we left home early in the morning with a group of friends and an outside temperature of -10 degrees Celsius. Hopefully a nice warm sun takes care of our 100 km ride to the goal. The sky is clear and gives us a breathtaking view of the Alps and the Monviso: we are on fire for this adventure! The roads are very clean and we arrive at your destination without any problem.
Once in Pontechianale we are lined up with a long and slow queue of motorcycles waiting for the registration. We look for a place to mount our 4 tents, buying straw and wood for night, and within an hour or so our little camp takes shape. Party, sharing and extravagance, this is the air that you breathe deeply here at 1.587 meters above sea level.
Here you find old mopeds, motorcycles and sidecar equipped better than a camper van; great ideas to optimize the use of any object. In the main square small stands have been set up and some playful games take place at night. The sun sets on the frozen lake and between a glass of wine and a little “spirit” of our travel companion from Veneto, we start grilling hard on the steel barrels. During the night, in the town square, good music is played for a couple of hours, but we decide to stay around the fire talking about adventures and trips. We spend a pleasant night in the silence of the mountain and without suffering too much from the cold.
Sunday morning the wake up is the muffler noise of those who have to leave early. We take it easy and leave the Agnellotreffen with a few snowflakes falling on us.
Like any event, perfection does not exist: on arrival, a single box is not the best for the long line of motorcycles that every year gets more and more numerous, in addition to the usual “smart-ass” who jumped the queue. In addition, the ticket, unlike previous editions, did not include food vouchers but just some gadget of the event. Last but not least, there is no reduced fee for the passenger.
A young event, a lot of fun and with constant growing participation: my advice is not to ride there just for the day but spend the night in the tents, because that’s the only way to fully enjoy the spirit of these rallies.
Just ride! Marco and Sofia
